The essential tools are the hammer and the stake. Tinsmiths call what they use a stake rather than an anvil. Stakes are designed to fit in a tapered stake plate or a wooden stump. The most common tinsmith’s stake is a blowhorn stake. A hatchet stake is the next most common. these two are used for a majority of the work. The hammer is called a mallet and may be made of wood or rawhide which prevents marring the tinplate. There is a metal hammer that is called a setting down hammer.
